Obituary

Amanda June Carr

April 27, 1929 – September 2, 2022

Amanda June Carr of Mt. Vernon, Texas went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in the early morning hours on September 2, 2022.  She was blessed with 93 wonderful years on this earth.

June was born on April 27, 1929, to Fred Cowser and Annie (Hightower) Cowser.  She was born in Franklin County and graduated from Mt. Vernon Schools in 1946.  She married R.B. Carr on June 1, 1946.  They raised their 4 children, Beverly, Greg, Diane, and Lynne in Mt. Vernon.  The Carr’s owned and operated Home Town Food for 43 years.  June touched many lives of both customers and employees.

After losing R.B. in 1994, June remained active in the community through church and committee memberships, supporting MVISD and community functions.  June was a “Purley Community” girl who loved Mt. Vernon.  She married Bob Newsom in 1995.  He died in 1998.  June included “helping others” as one of her hobbies.  Her many acts of kindness included running errands for others, taking friends to appointments, checking on the neighbors, staying with friends who were ill, and offering someone a chance to get out of their room for a drive in the country.  June was a long-time member of First Baptist Church.  She loved being involved in her Sunday School class.  She was also a member of the Friends of the Franklin County Library and the Franklin County Historical Association.  In 2008, June was inducted into the Franklin County Hall of Fame.

June loved talking to everyone – family and friends on the phone, complete strangers in the doctor offices, and fellow shoppers in the stores.  She enjoyed bird watching and feeding squirrels. She was always proud of her yard that Manuel kept mowed and landscaped.  June loved to eat sweets (Sherri’s Peanut Brittle, Tom & Sandy’s Peanut Patties, B.F.’s preserves & jellies, Elaine’s cakes & pies, just to name a few) and loved sharing them with family & friends that dropped by to visit.  She was an avid reader and a Dallas Morning News crossword champ.  She enjoyed her morning coffee, Blue Bell in the afternoons, Texas Ranger baseball games, Hallmark movies, and the weekly Canasta games with friends Ozella, Glennis, Linda & the subs who filled in when needed.  And boy, you’d better not interfere with her Friday morning beauty shop appointments at Jan’s.  Thank goodness her sweet friend Sharon made sure she never missed those.

Most of all, June loved “get togethers” with her family.  She loved preparing for holidays and birthday celebrations.  She was proud of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She never passed up a chance to tell you their latest accomplishment.

June is survived by her son Greg Carr of Mt. Vernon; daughter Diane Deal of Mt. Vernon; daughter Lynne Overstreet and husband, Mike of Winnsboro; grandchildren Danielle Roberts of Frisco, Josh Deal of Desoto, Jeremy Deal of Godley, Jedidiah Deal and wife, Beth of Mt. Vernon, Jacob Deal and wife, Shana of Mt. Pleasant, Natalie Sexton and husband, Ryan of Winnsboro, Ashley Overstreet of Ft. Worth; and numerous great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at the Mount Vernon Memorial Funeral Home at 2:00 Sunday, September 4, 2022.   A Memorial Service will follow at 3:00.  If desired, contributions in June’s memory may be made to the Mt. Vernon City Cemetery.
